Indigo Knot — Knotted Halter Maxi Dress in Block Print Cotton

Indigo Knot is a sleeveless A-line maxi dress in block-printed cotton — steel teal-blue ground with an all-over white botanical buti: a stylised marigold/thistle flower printed by hand using carved wooden blocks. The front is clean: a deep V-neck, a relaxed A-line body, a hem that brushes the ankle. Then you turn around. Two fabric straps from the front panels rise up, cross and braid at the back of the neck, and fasten with a small chain. The back is entirely open below the strap. The dress is held only at the neck. The block print continues on the back panel, uninterrupted.

Wear it with flat brown loafers or sandals (as shown). Silver jhumkas, a pendant necklace. A dark leather tote if you're going somewhere, nothing if you're not. The open back makes a dupatta impossible — which is fine. The back is the statement.

Fabric

100% Cotton — block printed. The steel teal-blue ground has a subtle diagonal stripe woven or printed into the base, giving the fabric a layered visual texture. The white botanical buti is hand block printed on top.

Craft

Hand block print — the white botanical buti (marigold / thistle flower on stem) is pressed onto the dark-ground cotton using carved wooden blocks. Each impression is placed by hand. The slight variation in registration between motifs is the signature of block printing — no two pieces are identical.

The Back

The halter straps are cut from the same fabric as the dress, braided, and fastened with a small silver extender chain at the neckline. The braid creates a textural accent against the open back. The chain allows for adjustment.

Care

Hand wash cold. Wash separately in first wash — dark-ground block prints may bleed slightly. Do not wring. Dry flat in shade. Iron on reverse on low-medium heat. Do not bleach.

The back is the statement — style everything else to let it speak. Brown or tan flat loafers (as shown) keep the look grounded and prevents the dress from reading too formal. Silver jewellery in an Indian style — jhumkas, a pendant, rings — adds craft context that matches the block print. A dark tote or crossbody when you need to carry something; nothing when you don't. The block print and the open back together mean the dress doesn't need layering or accessories to read as complete.

Hand block print on dark-ground cotton — the botanical buti is pressed onto the steel-blue base using a carved wooden block dipped in white natural dye paste. The technique is closely related to Ajrakh printing from Kutch, where dark-ground block printing with natural dyes is a centuries-old tradition. Confirm the specific workshop and craft tradition with your team — the artisan note should name the region and family if known.

WASH CARE

Hand wash in cold water. Wash separately in the first wash — the steel-blue ground and the white block print may bleed slightly, which is normal for dark-ground block-printed cotton. Do not wring or twist. Dry flat in shade. Iron on the reverse side on low-medium heat. Do not bleach. Handle the halter straps gently when washing — do not pull on the braid.
